Authors brought city and country together at Voices on the Range this year. Students from Pittsworth State High School and Milmerran State School came together with students from many Toowoomba schools to listen to an interesting range of speakers. This year’s presenters provided students with a taste of poetry, a dabble in novels, a glimpse into the publishing world and some song writing on the side.

Despite the cold, wet and blustery conditions, Joel Glazebrook entertained an appreciative crowd at the lunch time concert in the quad. This and many presentations by the likes of James Moloney, JC Burke and Sally Collings not only kept students entertained but inspired them to consider the possibilities the written word offers.

Of course, those words need not only be written. Marco Gliori demonstrated, in his unique style, the power of the spoken work while performing some of his unconventional verse. We feel certain now that students have been given a little bit of encouragement and motivation to push the boundaries in that next English assignment and consider their audience, the opportunities of the context and exploit the purpose of the text type.
